Well, it’s about time. The “under God” clause in the Pledge of Allegiance has been ruled unconstitutional. What took them so long? Oh, the poor ambiguous deity loses power every day. I pledge allegiance to the Triune God of Scripture…

I forgot some major books in my post on liturgy…that goldfish memory.

Schmemann: Intro to Liturgical Theology. Also, partially related, For the Life of the World, The Eucharist, and Of Water and the Spirit. I have a hard time separating sacramentology from liturgiology.

I also left out the Lutherans. Marva Dawn: Reaching Out Without Dumbing Down. Um um um…the follow up to that. Can’t remember title. Argh.

And Gordon Lathrop. Both Holy Things and Holy People. And I also have a green and blue book in my head, but I can’t remember the title. Yeah. There. But if we want to really…ah…I better stop…but how can you without looking at the calendar…Laurence Stookey and Edward Horn III and…

Three things I’ve found interesting while researching Nathaniel Hawthorne:
1. He left the Presbyterian Church in 1825.
2. His daughter became a nun.
3. In the Scarlet Letter, Hawthorne makes Bellingham the governor instead of Winthrop (who was governor at the time). Why? Well, think about the scene where the governor is trying to take away Pearl because Hester was a sex offender. Uh huh…now isn’t it ironic that Bellingham was a sex offender? Yep. Bellingham “stole” the twenty year old fiancee of some Puritan, and he “married” her without any ceremony or legal covenant.

I finally thought of someone famous that I’ve met. I told you I had met several famous people, but I used to sit on the sidelines and talk to Sammy Sosa all the time at Tulsa Drillers game. Him and Chuck Carr were really cool guys. I’ve probably spent twenty hours of my life talking to each of them. And I guess I’ve met Bobby Dorr, and Ralph Kiner before he died. I’m sure I’ve met some other famous people, but baseball got in my head for about five minutes.

On the ole JDominator blog, we get the question of liturgy books. It is so odd that he asks this because I was going to list some of my favorite yesterday but ended up getting too busy. Well now I don’t have my books near me, but let’s see which were worthy of my memory.

N.T. Wright has a book For All God’s Worth if you simply like to read Wright. I wasn’t all that impressed. He does have a good paper, but I can’t remember the name of it.

I’ll agree with John on Jeff Meyer’s The Lord’s Service.

Jim Jordan’s The Liturgy Trap is okay. Theses on Worship is the book that got me interested in liturgy. Liturgical Nestorianism and the Regulative Principle has a wonderful chapter outlining different views of the RPW. From Bread To Wine: Toward a More Biblical Liturgical Theology is a must read.

Thomas Howard’s Evangelical Is Not Enough is what I would hand to a friend and say, “Read it, and we’ll discuss it.”

J.J. von Allmen has a wonderful work called Worship: Its Theology and Its Practice. It isn’t the easiest read though.

Louis Bouyer has some good works, but again, they’re not as lightly written. I can’t remember the name of the book in my mind…maybe Liturgy and Life or Liturgical Piety

Hugh Oliphant Old has a series on worship throughout different centuries. They’re worth the read, and Worship: the Reformed Tradition is okay.

As soon as school is out, I plan on starting Richard Paquier’s Dynamics of Worship. This is impossible to find, and someone finally made me a photocopy. I’ll make you one too if you want to pay for copies and shipping.

Dom Gregory Dix’s The Shape of the Liturgy seems to be the standard.

Nicholls and D.G. Hart have new books out, but I haven’t read them yet.

I’d go with Meyers and the last Jordan book I mentioned or the Thomas Howard book for starters.

Public schools have made me a social misfit.
