Wayne Whitmer

So he joins a church, and the next day shuts down his blog. What’s up with that? The journey is over?

Music

This is why it’s important in education.

1. Good worship requires good music. Worship is central, so music is also central. It’s important not only to sing with exuberance, but also with skill. Music affects the growth of the Church. See Rick’s article, Into the Depths of Shallowness. We need to learn how to be competent musicians (by this I don’t mean that everyone has to be at a professional level, but I think we all need some basic music knowledge in order to sing well corporately) for the sake of the well-being of the Church and in order to worship God as He has commanded us. This is the primary reason that I think music is vital to our education.

2. Music is cultural, and culture influences people (duh). We need an explicity Christian culture, in every single aspect. Music is extremely influential in culture, and is a witnessing tool. If CCM artists are going to keep producing shoddy music, that doesn’t reflect well on Christianity. We need amazing musicians in the Kingdom. It’s just another way to gain the world’s respect and influence their thinking.

3. Music is a powerful language. It communicates lamentation or celebration. It shows forth God’s beauty. It helps us to understand the Creator more.

4. Who wouldn’t want to have kids that can sing like Bray Wilkins?

If Emeth Can Do It, I Can Too

Ramrick51: I think I am going to write a book.
Dutgarner: on?
Ramrick51: laziness
Dutgarner: that’s impossible
Ramrick51: lol
Dutgarner: your audience won’t bother picking it up
Ramrick51: lol
Ramrick51: i doubt i’ll ever finish it anyway
Dutgarner: yeah
Dutgarner: I doubt you’ll ever get started
Ramrick51: yeah
Ramrick51: i’m gonna go take a nap
Ramrick51: it’s almost lunchtime
Dutgarner: ok

ninepence83: I’m starving. Do we have anything for lunch?
Ramrick51: beer?
ninepence83: One beer.
ninepence83: And the cardboard remains of a six pack.
ninepence83: Why are we keeping it?
Ramrick51: I don’t know. I doubt that’s enough for both of us.

We’re probably keeping it for the same reason we are keeping the coffee colored mashed taters

Can’t Sleep

I was reading some things that I had previously written down in an old notebook of mine. On the first page, it reads,

Twisted Thoughts
Encircle my mind
Like the Unbreakable Knot
Tangled over time.

Is there medication for this kind of thing?

More Sleepy Rick Talk

Not only did Rick just tell me on the phone that “bunnies sleep in milk chocolate,” but he also asked me, “Will you be my badger?” Does that sound like a marriage proposal to you?

Just saw Gods and Generals

Wow…really…wow. Stonewall…wow…explicitly Christian view of the South.

Here is a silly excerpt from a fairly accurate review:

A convinced Calvinist, Jackson believed God had predestined each man to die on his appointed day. “My religion teaches me that I am as safe in battle as in bed,” he says here. “That is the way all men should live, then all men would be equally brave.” Yet this same noble conviction that allowed him to bear misfortune with equanimity also kept his conscience untroubled in the face of the unspeakablunspeakable cruelty of slavery.

By contrast, the god of Col. Chamberlain is the more universalist and egalitarian vision we see in the New Testament. Chamberlain here gives voice to a vision of a God who expects His followers to act as His agents to bring justice to the world.

Laurel’s post on hospitality…

is wonderful. She says, “So what if you didn’t think to ask a guest to bring something and she didn’t offer either? The guest might surprise you, or she might not. Just be prepared if she brings nothing. Have some extra wine on hand, and a dessert that keeps, like sorbet or ice cream. Move along with your stored items if no food gifts are on offer, thanking God for your guest and for the privilege of serving her.” That’s what’s so wonderful about hospitality…having guests that love the Lord share your table and having the privilege of serving them. What can be better?

On a side note, what about the Sabbatarian question? Especially in the South, I see a lot of Sunday Sabbatarians. Here, it’s kinda like, “Oh, on the way to our house, can you pick up…?” Any thoughts on that whole predicament?

I removed a post…

I’ve never removed a post before, but after being called a jerk, bastard, butthead, and being damned, I thought I should just remove it. You can just go to Jon’s blog if you want to see it.

Everyone always asked what…

I said when I first met Rachel. I said, “If I had a nickel for every time I saw a woman as beautiful as you, Id have five cents.”
