Fasting
What is the spirit of fasting? I have a problem with the view that Lenten fasting is necessarily private. It doesn’t make much sense to me. Sure, you have passages telling you to pray in your closet and anoint your head with oil when you fast. However, you have other passages demanding to make a public witness, and you have public fasts and feasts. If someone puts on sackcloth and ashes or rends their garments, that’s pretty open. With something like Ash Wednesday, I have ashes on my forehead. It’s pretty hard not to know that I am observing Lent. If I am observing Lent, I find no reason to avoid telling one of the things I’m giving up. When a denomination like the one I’m in (the CRE) calls a day of fasting, that again is pretty public. If I am fasting on my own, I’m not going to tell anyone. But if I am fasting or feasting with the church, I see no reason to make this private. I am not boasting in fasting, and I hardly think anyone who observes Lent does this. I hardly think fasting from movies shows my high spirituality. If anything, it tells that one of the things cluttering up my faith is pretty trivial.
