I’ve learned my lesson
It’s definitely an advantage to have my advertisement and contact info up on the bulletin board at the music store where I teach. I’ve gotten about half of the students that I now have through that poster on the board. But there is a scary side to giving out information like that, too. I just realized that scary side today.
The phone rings.
Me: “Hello?”
A guy responds: “Yeah, is Rachel there?”
“This is Rachel.”
“Oh hey, awesome. Right on. So, do you play in the symphony?”
“Umm.. I used to.”
“You’re a violinist, right?”
“Yes.”
“That’s so awesome. My friend plays the violin.”
I am wondering why the heck some random guy just called me to talk about my being a violinist. Then he gets to the point… or tries to.
“So I’m thinking about taking bass lessons.”
“Well, I only teach violin.”
Awesome. That is just totally cool. Violin is just awesome.
Uh huh. (I had nothing else to say.)
So, I see you every Thursday at Strings n More.
Okay, so, are you interested in violin lessons, or
Oh yeah. I totally am. Totally. Yeah. Yep. Thats what I want. This he says after mentioning taking BASS lessons from me. I dont think he really cared WHAT instrument I taught. Whichever it was, he was interested in it.
I think, This is a freak and I should run fast. Then I say, Well, give me your number, Ill check my schedule, and see if theres any open spots for you. Im planning on filling up my schedule quickly.
Of course, that wasnt good enough for him. He called again this evening. Twice. I didnt pick up the phone. I dunno what to do.
