Sean Mahan and Josh Blankenship

It’s always neat to see people I played football with go off to the NFL. The first were R.W. McQuarters, Kevin Lockett, and Jerry Wisne. Then Rocky Calmus. This year, Josh Blankenship may go. I am hoping he will go in the draft this year just so I can say, “I sacked an NFL quarterback.” I just realized that the Josh Blankenship at Eastern Washington University is the same Josh Blankenship that I played ball with in high school. I had seen the name and thought “Maybe it’s the same one,” but I hadn’t given it a second thought since THAT Josh Blankenship went to Tulsa. Turns out he transferred. Cool. I’ve been over to the EWU campus once. I should say hey. Josh Blankenship played for Union while most of the guys that seem to go pro are Jenks guys. I have no idea what Rocky Calmus did this past year in the NFL, and I wonder what’s gonna happen to Jason Lohr. He’s had two year’s of medical hardships, so he’s gonna get one more year at Nebraska. It’s doubtful he will go to the NFL with two years of medical hardship. Of all the people I ever played ball with, Jason would have been the one I suspected to go to the NFL first. I didn’t really care for lining up against Jason Lohr and Cory Callens. Talk about a scary line…Callens signed with the Baltimore Ravens, but is now in NFL Europe. It seems Sean Mahan is up for the draft too. (Just as a side note, his bench press has barely increased since high school. I think he was benching 405 and Lohr was benching 425 back in high school…that’s sad.) I remember lining up against Mahan and Andy Wisne, whose brother Jerry is in the NFL. I don’t think Andy ever made it; he just played for the Irish as far as I know. You’d think you’d be able to find a webpage listing all the players that went to the NFL from Tulsa around the time I played.

Thoughts

Spring is nice. Rain today was a pleasant surprise, even though the sunny weather is the best. Teaching violin is finally what teaching is always said to be: rewarding. Watching Gilmore Girls by myself in my bed is a sure sign of loneliness. I wish Emeth lived here. It would be nice to have a ring. There’s so few friends to spend time with here. I never spend time with any of the ones that are here. My life really does consist of folding laundry, teaching violin, and seeing Rick. That last part is the best part. If it wasn’t for that last part, I might end up as a missionary in Zimbabwe just so I’d have something productive to do. Of course, I’m finally starting to see the rewarding aspects of teaching small children who have 5-second attention spans. I wish I didn’t live out in the middle of nowhere. I wish I didn’t have writer’s block.

Chocolate bunnies, where are you?

Rachel: “I miss the south.”
Rick: “Me too.”
Rachel: “I miss you.”
Rick: “I miss you too.”
Rachel: “But I mostly miss chocolate.”

Underage drinking

Esther: “I want some juice.”
I pour her some juice that’s been in the fridge for who-knows-how long.
Esther: “Um. Rachel, this is wine. I don’t like wine.”
Me: “Esther, what are you talking about?” looks closely at glass to see that this juice has bubbles.

I guess Esther was right. I think that juice had been in the fridge a little TOO long, and was turning into its own unique alcoholic drink. I’m glad she caught it before it was too late. I’d hate to be responsible for getting a 3-year-old drunk.

It’s like new life has just begun… again

Post-Easter days never seem to be a depressing let-down. I’m all energized and ready for the new year! For some reason, it just seems like it starts every Easter.

Palm Branch Cross

That could be a good band name. Or a blog name. But it’s a question. I got palm branches on Palm Sunday, but I don’t remember how to make them into crosses. Help me…quickly…before they become too dry.

Easter Naps

After church, we had a little feast over at Rachel’s house. Then Rachel, Isaiah, and I walked down to their creek. I had the unfortunate displeasure of smelling skunk cabbage and the pleasure of seeing a bunch of trilliums. Then Rachel pulled out a couple of sleeping bags.

We laid them out on the grass, and Isaiah serenaded us to sleep with his guitar. Now, if you’re married you’ve probably taken this for granted, but I don’t think I’m ever more content than when Rachel and I fall asleep in each others presence. Sure, she was several feet away on her own sleeping bag. But I’m still somewhat near her. It’s not like I get to do this every night. We awoke to chattering adults (as their table was set up in the backyard, and they had done gone went out to talk). We went in the house some more and continued our feast :-) Then we went downstairs to do some Scripture reading. After doing our Old Testament reading, we went to sleep again lol. This time on couches on opposite sides of the room. We were being a bunch of sleepyheads, but we had stayed up late the night before with the Easter Vigil and then woke up early for the sunrise service. Overall, I had a great Easter day

I miss teaching

I miss teaching. I wouldn’t want to do it full time, but I’d love to just teach a class on Renaissance literature or the Old Testament.
