I’m backPosted by Rick on August 6th, 2003
That wasn’t so bad now, was it?
Why did I leave? Well, I felt like I needed sometime to do something with some of my past archives. I’ve changed a few of my entries to “extended entries.” In the future, these entries will be password protected.
A lot has happened in my short time away.
Rachel will be joining me here at this blog for the time being. We may decide to get a new domain name, but it just seems like there isn’t a reason to be on two different blogs. We have avoided a “couple blog” because some people think it’s like covenanting in marriage or something. The truth is, it’s just a blog. From our blog, some of you might think Rachel and I are gushy. But anyone that knows us knows we aren’t really gushy, and we just feel like this is more practical.
Since Davey and Emeth are courting, and the Ebbing Frog is emerging out of the water, it gives us no excuse to avoid this merger. If they can do it, why can’t we?
My roommate, Tim Eaton, is back to blogging. Hopefully, this time with a more optimistic view of life. His girlfriend will be back in a few days, so I’m excited about that…I am sure I am not nearly as excited as he is.
Mike and Kristen just married, and Kristen will be moving over to Mike’s blog. Speaking of Mike and Kristen, I got a call from Kristen after their reception…but before they went to the hotel. Only Kristen would call on the way to consummate her marriage. Mike was washing off the junk on the car because, as all males tend to be, his groomsmen put stuff on it, thereby delaying their…time alone. I think this is the most annoying tradition. I think it’s anti-Christian. Yes, shaving cream on the car is surely the Devil’s doing. That extra fifteen minutes that they spent at the car wash would kill some people. In fact, studies show that 83% of people that have to wash off their car before they go to the hotel end up dying. Okay, studies don’t show that, but you can imagine if they did.
I’ll be teaching at Whitworth College in the fall. Whitworth is a PCUSA school, so this will be a nice change from the secular colleges at which I’ve taught.
One thing I hate about the whole college thing is getting paid once a month. I won’t even get paid until the last day of September. Of course, you do get two bigger paychecks in December, which is always nice right before Christmas.
An added benefit is getting to use the weightroom. Tim and I started a routine on Monday. We’re both pretty sore, but I’m content with my starting strength.
My goal is to weigh between 240 and 265 by the end of the school year, get my bench back up to at least 405, and squat at least 585. Those are pretty high goals, I think. I haven’t maxed out yet, so I don’t know how strong I am. I was able to do a few sets with 225, but when I moved up, I struggled. That’s pretty pathetic, considering the weight I’ve gained since I stopped working out in high school. I imagine I’ll hit the bench press goal first and the squat goal second. Of course, the one I want to hit first will probably come last.
I have a potential contract pending with Meshereth. I won’t find out about it until tomorrow. I’d be getting about $400 a month for just finding this guy. So please pray for that. With trying to save up for the whole marriage thing, along with hopefully making a trip overseas for a wedding, that would be a nice little bonus.
My pastor had a baby named Katerina.

I think you meant she called after the wedding, not after the honeymoon. As for the car thing, it’s a time honored tradition that couldn’t just go unfulfilled. Of course, I have no idea who would’ve done such a thing, or whose idea it originally was…. Still, I think I’ll take a limo to my hotel.

It’s evil…evil. I think it’s a dumb tradition. Throwing rice used to be a tradition too, but people have moved to bubbles and bird seed. That dumb tradition is like rice for cars. It’s damaging, it wastes time, and it ticks people off. Not to mention it wasn’t their car…

Rick and Rachel are back! Oh, happy day!

I completely agree with you on that whole dumb tradition thing Rick. I think when I get married, I’m going to mail letters to the groomsmen asking them sincerely not to do such.

My car will probably still be broken by the time I get married, so I’ll probably just have to hire one, or we can just ride off into the sunset on our department store bicycles. How romantic.

Look, y’all. When you get married, park one car and let
everyone assume that it is the one you will be driving. Meanwhile, hide your other car. The groomsmen can decorate the one that they think you will be driving — but you’ll actually drive the other one. Then you can ask one last favor of your father/brother/sister to take your car through one of those carwash things while you are on your honeymoon. Or, you can get a friend with a nice car to drive you off after the reception. Groomsmen would be unlikely to decorate a car that they know belongs to someone else. Then get the person driving you to take you to your car that you have hidden somewhere. That is what Jon and I did.

Hey, they decorated Kristen’s mom’s car!
I have faith that my groomsmen won’t do it, but I can’t say I’m the only that’s had that faith.
It would be like giving me the italian kiss of death.

Congratulations on job at Whitworth. What will you be teaching?
August 9th, 2003 at 6:39 am
I don’t think pleading with groomsmen would deter their plans, but only encourage them more. Depends on the chumps who are your buddies, I guess.
Good to see you blogging again. Good luck with both Meshereth and Whitworth.

You mean there are people who wash that stuff off before they get to the hotel?
August 12th, 2003 at 8:44 am
Well, yes we did wash it off. I’m sure someone took a picture of it, and we’ll post them.
However, we WERE NOT going to stay the night in Wake Forest, a city in which the population doubled with the arrival of our family. So, we stayed in Chapel Hill, at the Carolina Inn actually. Since the drive from Wake Forest to Carolina Inn is about a half hour and we had to use the highway, it was necessary. Also, Kristen was worried about the paint, and at this point we didn’t think we were going to end up buying the car.
