George Bush seems to be a regular ole Joe. He’s pretty cool.

Wow Rick that only took you about three years to evaluate his personality :)

  2. Pieter Friedrich Says:

Nice guy, I’m sure. Terrible president.

  3. Certain Lutheran Blogger Says:

    :P

    Pieter,

    Why?

  5. Pieter Friedrich Says:

Oh, because he took us into an illegitimate war in Iraq. He lied about that same war. He’s increased the size of the government drastically. He’s set to be the biggest spender since Johnson. He’s done nothing for the pro-life movement. He’s nominated good judges but not supported them. He’s appointed several open homosexuals to his administration. He’s got us into Liberia.

I could go on, but those are some of my major beefs.

  6. GOPhim Says:

Illegitimate? Go cry a river and join the UN. What are we to do as Christians if some dictator is slaughtering thousands of his own people? Plus, we needed to get a good base in the Middle East, and Iraq was the perfect target. The United States relies too much on oil. I think it was a brilliant move for Bush.

He cut off foreign aid for abortion. Haven’t you been watching the news?

  7. barlow Says:

    1. Whatever you think of the war, it wasn’t “illegitimate” by any normal standard. Arguably, UN resistance to the war was illegitimate given that the war, not abstinence from it, was the logical response to the UN’s own mandates. Further, it was waged by several legimitate nations.

    2. Nowhere has Bush “lied” about the war. That is a certain way of characterizing it that just doesn’t hold. Even the British evidence that Iraq met with Al Qaeda is far from impeached.

    3. Bush has increased the size of government chiefly as it relates to national security. Nationalizing the jobs of the bag checkers was an unavoidable compromise with the democrats. Further, the combination of departments into the new “Homeland Defense” department was the only way to get the various agencies talking given our present system. All of the things you would like to see Bush eliminate from the Federal government would get him skewered politically. Nobody talks about getting rid of the Dept. of Education anymore for that simple reason.

    4. I’d like to see your evidence that Bush did not support his judges. Namely, tell me one thing Bush could have done that would have not hurt him and yet forced the democrats to do the right thing on the nominations.

    5. Last time I checked, it was still the law in the United States that competent people despite their sexual orientation couldn’t be excluded from consideration for employment.

    6. Liberia doesn’t bother me too much. Perhaps you’ve just got too tight of a standard for what the federal government can/should do. But most of us are beyond both the realpolitik and Theonomic minimalism.

  8. Ed Foss Says:

Hi. Liberia - Bush pre-election pledged not to engage in nation-building. Iraq - no WMD, no declaration of war, got UN resolutions though. Government - $87 billion for Iraq security, while our borders are not secured. Check again - Bush isn’t bound by EEOC for his appointees. People - how many of his people have WE killed? Over the years, what have we done for Tutsi, Russians, Chinese, Tibetans, Cambodians, Sudanese, etc? We found religion? GOP - next time I won’t worry about who’s “electable”, building the party and seeing abortion in light of the “big picture”. Friedrich - took me 20 years to get where you are now. Me - back to lurking.

  9. GOPher Says:

    Ed,

your comments are lacking a few things: 1) unity, 2) purpose, 3) evidence.

    Pieter,

    you too.

I can say from experience that the core of the republican party is not only uber-conservative, but uber-Christian. Uber Godly.

Bush isn’t perfect, but he is pretty good. Hopefully, we can and will do alot better.

Pieter, btw, do you support McClintock? I do. I think the GOP really screwed up by supporting arnie; Although, many important types in the republican party do support Tom.

Actually, Barlow, sexual orientation is not a protected class under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, or under the Equal Employment Opportunity Act. Only Age, Sex, Race (color), Nation of Origin, Religion, and Military Service are covered against discrimination.

  11. dawn Says:

(not that I generally disagree with your major points …)

  12. mark Says:

I believe these comments have caused enough frustration to give my former “just war” category a new birth.

  13. Gray Says:

I’m new to this site and blogging in general, but this issue concerns us all. Last I checked, God’s law demanded perfection, not “pretty good”. It is beyond me to know why the covenant head of our nation is excused away and patted on the back and accommodated by those who will be judged for supporting (through not resisting) these national sins. As Christians we must see that God’s law is clear, and our blatant disobedience will be no more tolerated than any of the pagan empires whose destruction the prophets prophesied. It’s time for true Christian patriots to reassert their stance as a vocal resistance to tyranny, instead of merely worshiping whomever our party allegiance is. The lesser of two evils is still evil, and though it will happen, it shouldn’t be welcomed and excused.

So there’s my two cents. I don’t mean to sound harsh or reactionary, but this is an issue that my friends and I have spent much time discussing, and I feel it necessary to be firm on. There was a time when politics in America were taken much more seriously, and I am trying to return my own thinking back to that standard.

  14. GOPher Says:

    Gray,

obvioulsy you are new both to the Christian faith and politics. God’s Law is a perfect standard that we cannot live up to, and therefore we need Christ. Because of His mercy for us, we should be merciful to our fellow brethern. Additionally, the US President, unlike what you may think, is not a totalitarian. Bush cannot do whatever He pleases, and must proceed forward in a strategic manner. Does he always make me happy? No…but I know that he does do alot of good things; I also know from personal experience that He is a Godly man who is humble before God, and is striving to become more and more Godly in all areas of his life.

    GOPher

P.S. Parties are made of people; If you are unhapppy with a party, go reform it! We live in a 2 party system, and that will never change. The Republican party has a base and core of leaders that are Godly and work towards that end, unliike the Democrats, that have no Godly leadership. Therefore, we should work within the republican party.

  15. Nathan Says:

*Is in disbelief that there are still people like “GOPher” left in the world who allow Straussian tatics to affect their Christian perception of political issues*

“obvioulsy you are new both to the Christian faith and politics.” -our pal the GOPher

Not only has Gray been a committed Christian his entire life….but he spells obviously correctly too.

  16. Nathan Says:

“tactics” *wink* *That’s what comes of writing long documents til the wee hours of the morning*

GOPher, it’s just not very catholic to call someone, whom you’ve never met, “new” to the Christian faith simply because they do not happen to share your views on politics or current political leadership….

  17. Josh S Says:

According to the David Kay report, Saddam was in pretty gross violation of the 1991 cease-fire agreement. Legally, all that’s needed to open fire is violation of such an agreement.

Oh wait, treaties and laws don’t count! What counts is our feelings and the rhetoric we get from Dan Rather!
