Stupid presbyterians

I have to wonder what causes all the division in Presbyterian and Reformed camps. My first guess is pride. It seems to me that because presbyterians are anti-heirarchical, they’re always fighting to gain a spot in the imageless heirarchy of their special group.

Pride is definitely the root of it.

Pride is part of it. Another part is isolation. If you only talk to people who mostly agree with you, slight disagreements kill your ability to love them. But if you are in a wider ecumenical context, you might, for instance, band together with your Roman Catholic friend to defend the importance of the atonement against your Eastern Orthodox friend who is emphasizing the incarnation or something. Duncan dislikes Wright, but he and Wright are indistinguishable on the theological perspective from the vantage point of open theism, for instance.

I meant to type “on the theological spectrum”, not “perspective”…

….and add in a good dose of American individualism.

I’m Scotch-Welsh, so I can bring this up…:), but perhaps also part of the minimalism manifests itself as a perversion of the old Scotch societal system itself. When the Scotch and Scotch-Irish came over here, they’d lived in or known a culture in the old Clan contexts. Nothing against particularism, I don’t mind the idea of Clans(which haunt the South to this day), but when it gets in the way of Church unity, it is problematic.
