I know the answer. It was a skunk trap, actually, and *that* one was not intentional. The trap didn't kill the cat - we found it stuck in the barn fence the next day and I (cough) took care of it. I don't know anything about mosquito repellent, but you forgot to mention some good old-fashioned .22 rounds. As for the two-by-four; you can't prove that!!!

Barb, it's not like we like killing cats. It was the only safe and merciful thing to do.

Beer, OK. I'm willing to give you the benefit of the doubt. But, I'd sure like to know under what circumstances you're routinely killing cats. Or skunks.

If I were a horse farm owner and on that farm a horse stepped in a groundhog hole & broke it's leg, I suppose I'd dispose of the groundhog (as humanely as possible). So, don't misunderstand...I can understand killing pests-or, preferrably, getting rid of them some other way. But I also know that people are cruel and enjoy killing sometimes.

I lived in the country. We had problems with stray cats, skunks and raccoons. They cause all kinds of trouble. Skunks and Raccoons kill chickens, and stray cats are just a pain and they fight with *our* cats. So we get rid of them.

"And the cats will be with you always."

The damage to wildlife caused by cats is huge. I'd have some trepidations about killing somebody's pet, and one of the hard things about cats is that a lot of "feral" cats are semi-pets, so one often can't be sure one isn't killing off someone else's property. But I don't have any complaints about people wanting to protect their own property from vermin, which is what cats sometimes become. Dogs too, for that matter. It's too bad some humans are so irresponsible with their pets.

All right! I confess! I killed the cat! This was in the mid 80's and we had 3 small kids and this mean stray cat was a menace to our children. I had to kill another one years later but I dispatched it quickly with a 22 revolver. Who knows if I had not taken care of the first cat that our children may have caught some horrible disease from that cat and you would not be able to enjoy their profund utterances today on their blogs?

We don't kill pets, we kill strays. Our house is a haven for strays. One of our cats was a stray kitten, and she's stayed with us for many years (as in, we didn't kill her). As for the real strays, I say if they're *so* hungry that they come to our house instead of any "owner's" house, then it seems obvious that nobody cares for them.
