More Katrina ThoughtsPosted by Rick on September 1st, 2005
The loss down here is just unbelievable. There are so many evacuees. You can’t go to a restaurant without seeing a family whose home is under water. Our coliseum is at full capacity. Our university has allowed evacuees free tickets to our home opener tonight. Hopefully, it will be a breath of fresh air.
What could we have done to prevent this? As I said, we could have taken environmental precautions. As Jon noted, we could have built our levee system better. We could have done a number of things to help lessen the blow of Katrina.
Would it have stopped the devastating effects of Katrina? No. Would it have made them a lot less? Yes. This isn’t hubris, or an I told you so attitude. It’s just common sense. We’ve been too arrogant for too long. We think we’re invincible.
And it’s so, so frustrating that we’re at this point? What can we really do for New Orleans? What will be left when the waters subside?
All we can do now is offer our food, money, homes, and hospitality. And it just doesn’t seem to be enough.
