I recently decided to splurge on a diaper for Epiphany. Almost all of her diapers are homemade and have been a part of my rotation for the last couple years—in other words, they’re hand-me-downs from Antonio’s diapering days. I love those diapers, but I kept hearing about Sunbaby diapers and how inexpensive and cute they were. I have to say I’m thoroughly impressed with them. They are definitely cute, the fit works great, they’re very soft and silky, and they seem to hold in everything just fine. I got mine for $7, including shipping. For a one-size diaper, this is extremely cheap. When you buy them in bulk, they come out to about $5 a diaper. Of course, the shop is temporarily closed because of too many orders, but once it reopens, these diapers are definitely worth investing in.

I used to think that it was. I used to ridicule moms who did it, wondering why they’d bother with all the extra mess and work. But once I started, I realized it wasn’t much extra work, would save me a lot of money, and would actually be fun. Not to mention, cloth diapers are just plain cute.

A lot of troubleshooting and trial-and-error were involved when I first began cloth-diapering. I just had to figure out what system worked best for me. Now that I’ve been doing it for over three years, I feel that I have some experience under my belt and everything is smooth-sailing. I even make my own baby’s diapers, not only because they are cheaper than store-bought, but because I can customize the material, print, color, and fit just as much as I want.

I pretty much only wrote this blog post because I wanted to post cute cloth diaper pictures.

It’s been FREEZING for March here in Spokane. We’ve set a couple new records for coldest lows and highs the past couple days. So, when it’s too chilly to enjoy the outdoors, I’ve been crafty in the house!

I made a fitted diaper for Antonio, which is super cute, but sadly needs a cover if I don’t want him to leak onto something like the furniture. I think I am going to wait until I have some PUL (waterproof fabric) before I use up the rest of this material, and then make an AIO (all-in-one) diaper next time. That way, I won’t have to cover up the cute fabric! Still, I love how this turned out.

Then, I made a dress for Kyrie, using my own pattern. She loves it, and I’m pretty happy with the results, although there were a couple things I wished I’d done just a bit differently.

I decided to take pictures of my diaper stash today. I tried to get them all clean at the same time, but there are a couple BumGenius ones missing from the collection.

Here’s what I’ve got. I’ve got two Thirsties covers in red and blue, a bummis super snap cover and a prorap cover below that, and then a Dream-Eze AIO (All in one) diaper. I already have prefolds in the covers. Next to all those are my BumGenius One-Size pocket diapers. The pink ones are Kyrie’s (obviously) which she wears at nighttime. They’re on the biggest snap-setting, whereas Antonio’s are still on the smallest. On the bottom of the pic are some prefolds and cloth wipes (aka baby washcloths) that kinda got cut off because they’re not as cute/interesting.

They don’t quite all fit in this drawer…most of them do.

Here’s Antonio modeling the Dream-Eze AIO. I would like these diapers even more if they came in cuter colors.

And here I am at the park with Nio in the moby wrap, sleeping.

I decided to branch out and get some diaper covers for Antonio. I just place a trifolded prefold in these and fasten them. It helps space out how often I need to do diaper laundry. And I got covers in primary colors. I overall prefer my BumGenius pocket diapers (can’t beat them when it comes to absorbancy), but I really like the brighter colors with these covers. Oh, by the way, they’re Thirsties covers. If you cloth diaper and have been thinking about trying them, just FYI, they run REALLY big. I ordered smalls and Antonio will definitely be wearing these for a long time.

So I thought I’d give a little update on our life while I have a minute.

Antonio is 1 month and 1 week old today. I have no idea how that happened! Time has really flown by. Antonio has been a good baby, but not nearly as easy as Kyrie. Part of it, I’m sure, has to do with the fact that he can’t get my undivided attention like Kyrie could. So the poor guy cries more. But he is also a very smiley baby, and has been smiling regularly since he was 2 weeks old. He gave me his first smile at only 6 days old. He even giggles sometimes and he coos all the time. He loves staring at the pictures on the wall. He also has quite a strong sucking instinct, so although I’d planned to go pacifier-free with him, I caved in and got him one. He’s a lot happier now. I decided that it was better to give him a pacifier sometimes than to let him cry when I couldn’t get to him right away. I realize that I’ve now broken the rules of ecological breastfeeding and likely won’t be able to, well, keep my cycles away for long…but maybe I’ll still luck out. He still nurses frequently, so we’ll see.

Teaching Kyrie to be a gentle big sister has been a bit of a work in progress. She really loves him and gives him lots of kisses and hugs, but she also tries to pick him up and sometimes just gets too rough when she’s not thinking. She’s adjusting pretty well, though, and getting used to sharing Mommy with another little one. I’m also learning how to divide my time so that both kiddos get enough love & affection. Kyrie is a really big helper. Whenever I ask her to get a burp cloth, blanket, diaper, or whatever, she’ll dash off to find what I need and bring it to me.

Cloth diapering is going well and is pretty easy. I like the fact that we don’t have to buy diapers or wipes at the store. I have to keep on top of the laundry, but it’s not too big of an inconvenience. I feel like I’ve gotten into a pretty good rhythm to make sure I’m never running out of clean diapers. They look really cute on Antonio, too. I need to take more pictures of him in them.

I love both of my babies so much and right now, I feel like our family is complete. Eventually I want to add more children to the mix, but for now, I’m quite content with my little princess & prince. I’m such a proud Mommy and I can’t believe how beautiful my little blessings are. Seriously, gorgeous kids. Okay, now I’m shamelessly bragging…but I’m betting you all agree!
